The Blue Angels roar through Seattle every summer. They put on a show over Lake Washington as part of Seafair. And while the show is absolutely incredible, watching the Blue Angels takeoff is a show in itself. And you can see it happen at Boeing Field (aka King County International Airport).
The Blue Angels fly Wednesday-Sunday during Seafair week in early August. Wednesday is typically a media day, Thursday is for practice runs, and they fly Friday-Sunday during the Seafair air show. The Blue Angels takeoff at different times all five days so be sure to track down the schedule. For reference, here is the schedule for 2023.
Blue Angels Takeoff From Boeing Field
The Blue Angels takeoff from Boeing Field toward the northwest (in the direction of downtown Seattle). That makes Ruby Chow Park and the areas around it, perfect for watching the Blue Angels takeoff. Just be aware that parking is pretty limited in the area — unless you don’t mind a little walking. You probably want to get there early, especially on Saturday and Sunday.
From Ruby Chow Park, the Blue Angels takeoff right over you. They are so close it feels like you can reach up and touch them. The takeoff lasts all of maybe a minute, but feeling, seeing, and hearing the roar overhead is totally worth it. You then get glimpses of the Blue Angels throughout their show and practice run, and they occasionally fly overhead. But this is not the best place to watch the full show.
The biggest thrill for me is at the end of the Blue Angels run. All six jets fly in formation directly overhead toward the southeast (so back toward Boeing Field). It’s the most thrilling moment I’ve ever had watching the Blue Angels in all my years in Seattle. They thunder by at a very low altitude. It’s so loud that it even made a car alarm go off on my most recent visit to watch the Blue Angels at Boeing Field.
Blue Angels Takeoff Photography and Video
For photography and video enthusiasts, Ruby Chow Park and the surrounding area is an awesome place to capture the Blue Angels taking off. Mount Rainier is in the distance behind the runway, allowing for some spectacular shots as the Blue Angels launch for their show.
If you haven’t seen the Blue Angels takeoff in Seattle, it’s definitely worth watching at least once. Head to Boeing Field in early August for the thrill of your summer.
